Nice Healthcare Turns Five!

It’s our birthday! Nice turns five this month, and we’re so proud of the progress toward our mission: to make getting amazing everyday care easy and affordable. Over the years we’ve partnered with thousands of organizations and their employees to do just that. 

During that time, we’ve learned a lot. In celebrating this latest milestone, we asked our founders two questions about what they’ve learned along the way, and what advice they have to help other leaders thrive.  

Who are our founders?

Thompson Aderinkomi, Co-Founder & CEO, oversees the overall strategic vision for Nice and ensures our organization’s goals become a reality. 

Genevieve Swenson, Co-Founder and COO, oversees operations and logistics at Nice, all while working with our clinical staff to provide the nicest healthcare experience out there.  

Allison Santos, Co-Founder & VP of Engagement, oversees the client experience at Nice and ensures our employers are getting the most out of the best benefit on the market.

What do you wish someone would have told you when you founded Nice five years ago? 

Allison: I wish someone would've told me to lean into my creativity. I was confident in my work ethic and knew I would learn and do whatever it took to be successful. However, I wish someone had told me to step back from the hard work mindset for a moment and let my ideas and creativity fly a bit more. I've learned over the past five years that when I give myself that space, I have great, meaningful ideas.

Thompson: I wish someone would have told me to take even bigger risks than we did. In the early days, everything seemed like a risk and there was no safety net for any of the founders. However, now looking back, I can see that there was no risk taken that destroyed us or that could have destroyed us, and the same is true today.

Genevieve: It’s difficult as a founder not to wrap so much of your heart, soul, and energy into a company that it starts to become an overshadowing aspect of your life. Nice Healthcare is a great, wonderful, amazing business that is making a difference in the lives of so many, but it’s still just a business at the end of the day. Related to this, I would also like to tell myself five years ago that I shouldn’t just talk about taking care of myself (physically and emotionally) but that scheduling the time to do so is just as important to the success of the business as scheduling a meeting with a potential client.

How must employers change what they’re offering employees over the next five years to remain competitive?

Genevieve: Many employees are looking for flexibility in their work schedules and variation in their work duties, coupled with ongoing and productive feedback that leads to growth opportunities. Employers also need to continue to work on ways to allow meaningful time off and a less stressful return to work after their time off. These are all challenging in many industries, including healthcare, but it’s also why industries like healthcare have higher burnout and turnover rates and why we, at Nice, will continue to work with our teams to find ways to improve. 

Thompson: Internally at Nice, we think it's important to create a great working environment where people don't just earn a living wage, they earn a thriving wage, all while doing work that matters.

Allison: Thompson hit the nail on the head. Employers should focus on providing benefits that either increase take-home pay, or ensure that when an employee needs something, they have a benefit that provides it easily and affordably. Increasing wages for all employees isn't always possible, but a great start is providing unique and innovative benefits that take care of their basic needs, put money back in their pockets, and help them invest in their quality of life. That would be an employer I would consider and call “competitive.”
